Sean Rowland from Surfline sent me through this sequence from my Round 1 heat at Teahupoo.

Just got clipped as I was coming out of this one, probably would have changed the heat result had I have stayed on my board.

That’s the problem with the new format the ASP and certain event sponsors have come up with, no more second chances. Not too many surfers are happy with this new format.

Either all the 45 should start from the same round, no preferential seeding for the top 16 but have the straight knock out from Round 1 or go back to the old format, 3-man Round 1 heats, but use the Kelly format with it. There are ways around it …

My opinion, this new format is not the way to go, it’s been tried and tested and it sucked so hopefully companies see this and listen to the surfers and make some better changes.

  1. Yo, spot on. Surfers need the sponsors and sponsers need the surfers. At the moment it looks like the sponsors are running riot. Time for the surfers to flex some muscle !

  2. 100% agree with you Davey! I see a lot of other top 45 surfers feel the same way … along with many former CT surfers.

  4. Well i got ur point of view, but real pros don`t get second chances, u just have one shot at it, take it or not, bottom line is that u should stayed on ur board and make some money, if not, go home and practice a lot more…peace and respect.

  5. I agree with Dave Weare, it does suck. It doesnt promote innovative and exiting surfing in my opinion.
It pressures the 44 to surf safe in the first round to endevour to make it through, were as last year the 44 knew that
if they blew the first round they had a back up second round, to surf safe and try to make round 3.
From a spectators perspective surfing is not a great sport to watch, time surfing compared with time paddling/sitting is
just bareable, the ratio of that would be interesting. Its also along way to fly, stay, eat and spend for only 20 odd minutes
of competition to be shafted by mother nature or get beaten.
Id be interested what happens in Hawaii with the wild card, four man heat setup that they have had, will this new system
    over ride the hawaiian setup.
