I love Coffee and left points … Taiwan.

Yeah peoples, been a busy start to my year already.

… Firstly, I had an amazing summer break, heading down to my beloved Tathra for the Xmas festivities, then I headed over to Bali for the new Insight Clothing advertising campaign. While I was there I bolted up to Taiwan for a quick surf trip. We scored some really fun, rippable waves.

Got back and cruised up to Forster for a manly mates trip for three days. My good mate John Warn had a holiday rental for all the boys on the beach at Boomerang. Crazy house and pumping waves out front. Cheers buddy epic couple of days.

Currently I’m gearing up for the drive from Sydney to the Goldie for the first event of the year. I’m pumped and looking forward to pulling on the singlet.

Below is a photo grouping of my travels …

Just arrived on the Goldie for a run of swell last weekend. © Joli

Hello everybody!

First blog on and I’m blogging as qualified! I still can’t believe it … I guess I will only properly realise I’m on the WT when I’m going to paddle out for my first heat at Snapper end of February. Can’t wait.

But first things first ’cause some of you might not know me. No, that’s not possible … just kidding. Well, everything came down to Hawaii really and what an emotionally draining trip that was!

Was sitting in 9th before Haleiwa. Then the incredible happened: all the guys right behind me got results, something which never really happened before. Boom, down to 14th place. That was quite a shocker for me and I was really down for a while.

Sunset. Missed one last turn. © Joli

It was now all down to Sunset really, where I had to make two heats to better my points. The waves during the contest at Sunset were huge and I had a tough heat against Hank Gaskell, CJ Hobgood and Dayan Neve. I caught a couple of good waves and getting out of the water, I felt like I did myself proud, but it wasn’t enough.

I missed one last turn on my last wave and I didn’t get the score I needed. CJ Hobgood then went on to win the event but that was it for me really. Boom, down to 16th!

Back in Portugal after finding out I’d made the cut.

Well, there was one slight chance. Because if Tiago would do well at Pipe he’d double qualify and a place would open up for me. Things were out of my hands though. And then came the SMS from Tiago when I was already back home in Portugal: “I’m injured, really sorry, I can’t surf …”

I thought, well, it is not meant to be, but at least I’m the first replacement and I’ll probably surf some events during the year. And then the call from my brother while I was out for a few drinks: “Marlon, you’re in, they just announced it on the webcast during Pipe!” I couldn’t believe it …

Could see the ocean from my bed.

Since then I’ve been hanging in Ericeira, Portugal. I got myself an apartment up here to train with Tiago and to work closely with my shaper Nick from Semente to get my quiver ready. Check out the pad I rented. It’s sick (in the photo you only see the pool house!).

Sick waves at a little beachie not far from where I’ve been training.

Spent some time shooting photos with Carl from Transworld Surf who was down here in Ericeira with Damien “Dom” Wills from Australia. What a crazy guy. Loves to charge. Gony was there for a day as well. I also got a little filming done for a documentary which will air on Fuel TV in the US and in Europe at the end of Feb. Watch this space.

Meanwhile, back in the cobblestones of the Algarve …

Oh, forgot to tell you about a little incident down in Lagos where I live. After a fun night out with my brother and a couple of friends, some idiot looking for trouble punched me in my face and pretty much floored me … Had to get five stitches in the back of my head and was out of the water for over a week with a slight concussion.

Talk soon!

Tony Blair ruled and Obama prayed. ©

Was in Washington DC at the National Prayer Breakfast, with an estimated 3400 others from 182 countries. It’s a sea of political peeps. There’s a house, some cabinets, senators, prime ministers and a president.

Tony Blair went silly, definitely one of the best speakers I’ve ever witnessed. Obama did his thing and nailed it but Tony stole the show.

Oh, and I got my camera taken away. ©

The head dude from Kenya was at my table for brekky; met the head dude from Sri Lanka; senator from Florida … well, I know you mad huis don’t care and I don’t care about their titles either. Sorry for the pictures as like I said they really weren’t having cameras in the ballroom.

Little late on the edit and it’s really hard to vid when you’re playing Rambo in the woods after these pigs, but did get some stuff that only rookies would do.

Rocky Rights at the end of last year. © Joli

This year is definitely flying by. January has come and gone, but already some good stuff has gone down. I just finished a solid three-day training camp up at my trainer’s spot in Ballito (north of Durban).

A good mix of boxing/ yoga/ swimming/ gym etc, to get ready for the opener later this month. He’s got me on a really great program for the year, I’m feeling strong and fit and super amped and just really stoked I have such a passionate guy helping me with my campaign for 2009! Check out his website at

From the recent training camp. My trainer is the one in the middle and the guy holding the punching pads is Andre, a boxing instructor and former Sharks rugby player. ©

I’ve been getting some amazing boards off Elton Fursman so far this year, he’s been a real trooper over the years with all the time and effort he’s put into my career. I owe him big time. We’ve made some slight adjustments to my last year’s specs and the results are feeling great. One really good thing about Elton as a shaper is that if you ask him to do something, he does it. I’ve asked a few shapers over the years to do certain things to boards and you get something else, but he really puts a lot into each of his shapes and the boards speak for themselves.

Another person who’s really been helping me and I couldn’t have achieved half the things I’ve achieved or got to where I’m at right now is my wife Jayde. She’s been such a solid rock in everything I do, been behind me 100% of the way and I really do take my hat off to her for all that she does for me.

Less than three weeks til I’m off to the Goldy … the countdown begins!

One of the best things about surfing a contest at Coolangatta is there will only be a couple of guys in the water at any one time. © Joli
