TAHITI WIPEOUT

Well, don’t know where to start, but basically hadn’t had good waves in a while and was amping to get barrelled. So, during our break, was looking on the map for the best place to get that fix.

Tahiti looked like the best bet so was going there for 3 days then coming back home. The second day I was there was just what I was looking for – 6-8 feet no
wind and perfect swell direction.

Editor’s note: Damien’s had a bittersweet relationship with Teahupoo in the past. In the 2005 final he had to pull out midway after a dislocated shoulder (pictured). In 2007, he won the thing.

Got out in the water at about 7am and was planning on surfing all day. It came to about 3pm and took off on this stupid wave and broke my board and got washed in to the lagoon so was pretty mad at my self. Came back out pretty bummed at myself and then ended up doing something even dumber …

Don’t really know exactly what I was thinking except probably should have done
anything but what I did; hesitated on this wave, thought I could get out of it, got sucked over the falls, went straight into reef, knew I hit hard and knew that something had happened.

Hit my head pretty hard so was just trying to stay with it until I got out of the impact zone. Went to hospital to make sure everything was okay, and it was, besides some broken bones.

I took the next flight out and went and saw Dr. Kramer who said I fractured three parts of my scapula but I wouldn’t need surgery which I was really happy with.

Felt like things could have been way worse and in hindsight maybe shouldn’t have stayed out so long because was getting pretty tired, and not thinking properly isn’t good out there.

Peace,

Damo.

Hello all,

Sorry it’s been a little while, us pro surfers get bit selfish sometimes! It’s been such a crazy-busy start to the year; haven’t really stopped since Christmas.

I won’t bore you with all the details but — along with the usual training and getting ready for the start to the year (which has started pretty slowly for me, with two 17ths) — I’ve had about one million weddings to go to. Must be a sign of getting old! Haha, not that old ay, Snake!!! From the Goldie to Sydney to NZ it’s been fun.

Here’s some shots of a few and I’ll try and get more fun ones soon. Still recovering from Anthony Macdonald’s (brother of Phil’s) wedding!

Oops, not a wedding but a cool shot of the boys at a charity night for Y.O.D.A (Youth Organ Donation Awareness).

OFF TOUR RECAP

Well, hello, hello all … it’s been a while. A world of change in my life,
so I’ll give you a quick recap. I went to Hawaii and knocked Occy out of his last heat … heavy, worst win ever. Anyway I lost next heat and ended my competitive career as well.

Since then, I was offered an apprenticeship with Quiksilver learning the ropes, which I’m doing now. I haven’t missed the tour yet, I commentated at the Quik Pro on the Gold Coast and won the trials at Bells (“God’s Country”) and made it into the event, wicked.

Pretty Cool. Being a Torquay boy, I got to surf my last ever WCT at Bells Beach against the world champ. I grew up in the bush about a kilometre from Bells so the place is pretty special to me.

Winkipop, 10\' offshore, no one out and cold. Love it. Shots like this (taken a week after Easter Bells) make me homesick.

I’m not strapped behind a desk just yet. I did a banging trip to Kuala Lumpur for the “Quiksilver Revolution 2.0” tour; Craikey, Kerrsy, Betet, Gravesy and I tearing it up. We were getting towed-in to a manmade wave and trying to punt as high as we could.

There were rock bands, DJ’s and a 10′ vert ramp with the boys going nuts and 40,000 people watching. It was Big Day Out meets extreme sports. Sick.

That’s it for now. Hopefully we’re going to try doing these blogs in both English and Portuguese soon too, and stay tuned for some video of all the Brasileiro crew free-surfing down in Victoria which we’ll put up next week.

See you soon,

THE BALI RECOVERY PLAN

What’s not to love about this island?

What’s not to love about this island?

I love Bali! Bali, Bali, Bali.
Especially when I have had three of the biggest nights of the year in a row.

It’s been a super fun few weeks. I spent three weeks in Bells this year and had my most fun time in the Victorian state ever. TB, his trainer Johnny Cannon, High Nevel and I; surfed, trained, listened to filthy beats and watched many clips for the whole time and to tell you the truth I could do it forever.

High Nevel, hard at work.

High Nevel, hard at work.

We scored really fun waves and hot weather, which was cool for that time of year. TB knocked me in the 4th round of the event which was a bummer but he surfed really well and I was happy to lose to someone in form.

I then started my party planning. A big night at the Event party was really fun but it was hard driving to Mel airport at 7am. It was all good though because that night I went to watch Queens Of The Stone Age with a pass that allowed me to basically go and sit on Joey Castillo’s lap while he played the drums.

I was there with Kai Otton and we got to take Josh Homme and the band out on the town and I was pretty much like a little kid in a candy store. Otto could not string two words together because he was so excited and he was not even drunk; at 3am, when we walked out of the bar, I can tell you one thing, I was. Hahahaha.

I then had to get over a hangover and get ready for the V Festival where I watched the Queens again and also Smashing Pumpkins, Air and the Presets. All were amazing but I was starting to hit a serious wall.

Here’s hoping the Bukit gets some of this on the horizon before too long.

I’m now kicking it in Bali and the surf is dead flat so I’m really getting to know the massages and I’m pretty much the most rested kid on the island.

Awesome.

Return To Oz

Just got back to the States after almost two months in Oz. Had a great time and got some pretty fun waves. The Goldy was good but think the place is too crowded now. Think it could well be the most crowded place in the world!

At the Superbank

At the Superbank, space in the water was at such a premium, my brother and Kelly were forced to hit the same lips at the same time. © Joli

After the comp I went to Sydney and had a great old time with the family and caught all sorts of waves … thought it was pretty funny that I was going to the largest city in Australia to escape the Goldy crowds.

It was mostly warm at Bells

After a week there we went down to Melbourne for the next comp and didn’t totally know what to expect since we were there really early in the year and heard there hadn’t been waves for a while down there. To our surprise, just as we arrived, the weather started changing and the waves were pretty fun the whole time we were down there. Wasn’t too cold either.

Had a great time in Oz, always love spending time down there, it’s a great country and I feel blessed to go there every year.

Peace,

Damo
